Hosted by the Marietta Manor Historic site, the new market offers produce, popcorn, and pickling classes.

With 22 vendors and counting, the Glenn Dale Farmers Market is one of the area’s newest and largest spots to shop local and organic.

The market is held at 5626 Bell Station Road every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Donny Oluokun, who organized the market.

Shoppers can purchase fresh, organic produce, meats, cheeses, and bread, as well as treats like popcorn and barbecue. Two recent additions to the market include a donut vendor and products for vegans.

Local artisans also sell products at the market. Oluokun’s wife, Elizabeth, is an artist and he said that the artisans are a perfect fit at the market because “art and food go together.”

Between stops at vendors, shoppers can learn how to pickle produce and make butter and goat cheese during classes at the market. Yoga and fitness classes will also be offered in the morning.

Oluokun and his wife decided to organize a farmers market after living abroad and recognizing the limited availability of local and organic products in Maryland.

“When you go overseas, the market is where you get your groceries, not the grocery store,” Oluokun said, adding, “We had to support local families and local farms.”

When the Oluokuns conceived the idea of the farmers market, they struggled to find a location in Glenn Dale. With the support of the Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation, the Oluokuns established the market at the Marietta Manor Historic site.

The market opened last month and will continue weekly until November 23.
