Get Out: Greenbelt Weekend Events

See a selection of what Greenbelt has to offer this weekend.

This weekend could possibly be a scorcher, with high temperatures and possible thunderstorms expected. But that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying weekend events in the Greenbelt area.

  • If lightening stays away, come to the on Friday, July 22. You can get admission for one free guest for the purchase of one full price admission. The facility has both an indoor and outdoor pool, and relaxing in the water could be a great way to get away on a hot summer day. The indoor pool is open from 6 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., while the outdoor pool hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Come down to 101 Centerway and check it out.
  • Join the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt on Saturday, July 23, at the City of Greenbelt Observatory at Northway Fields. Come observe some of the wonders of the sky. The event will be begin at about 9 p.m. and will give those with or without stargazing experience the chance to see stars, planets and other interesting formations. Speak to members of the Astronomical Society about getting involved or how you can become an avid stargazer. An evening event like this may provide a cooler time to enjoy the outdoors this weekend. But the event is also subject to cancellation should weather conditions prove inadequate for visibility.
  • In addition to the food of the weekly Greenbelt Farmers Market in old Greenbelt on Sunday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this week’s market will feature a cooking demonstration from Rita Calvert. Calvert will show onlookers how to cook brined pork chops with grilled nectarine glaze, a recipe from her new book, "The Grassfed Gourmet Fires It Up!" Calvert will take questions from the crowd as well. Those exploring the market can also participate in a craft activity, turning a recycled bottle into a grasshopper.
  • Looking for a little variety in the music that you listen to? Come out on Sunday, July 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., to the and hear Michael Edon playing flamenco tunes on his guitar as part of the mall's Latin Sundays series. Admission is free and open to all.
  • On Sunday, July 24, experience the one-man band of from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the . He's an amazing solo performer, who plays world music, electronica and reggae on multiple instruments.
