Frugal Families: Deals Around Town

Take advantage of these springtime deals to keep your family's budget in the black.

Here are five great ideas for families trying to watch their pennies:

  1. Looking for a way to celebrate with your mother, locally and frugally? How about the historic Riversdale where free tours will be offered for the special ladies in your lives on Sunday, May 8, from 12:15-3:15 p.m. Enjoy a guided tour of this historic house and don’t forget to check out the dependency kitchen, where Kitchen Guild members will be cooking up some yummy treats for moms. One free admission per each paid admission. $3 adults/$2 seniors/$1 students/ FREE children 4 & under. Purchase tickets at the Visitor Center.
  2. Drum roll please ... it’s what we’ve been waiting for all year. Greenbelt’s 7th Annual is finally here! Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 8, 11 a.m. 6 p.m. at the Roosevelt Center in Historic Greenbelt. This is two days of free music, food, local crafts, vendors and environmental awareness activities in the heart of our own green Greenbelt. You can even pick up a gift the day before Mother’s Day.
  3. Every Saturday in May from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Community Forklift in Edmonston will be selling plant seedlings at bargain prices including: tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and basil. Prices range from $1.50 to $3.50. They also have while supplies last, tree gator bags for $5. These are what you put around new trees after watering to keep them from drying out.
  4. The Greenbelt Farmers Market will open for the season on Sunday, May 8, at 10 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the Greenbelt Aquatic Center. Enjoy local produce, catch up with neighbors, and support this awesome community event. Some favorites: homemade mango Italian ice, hot off the grill crepes, and fresh apple cider.
