Flock Of Birds Brings Down Power in Greenbelt

The lights went out in Greenbelt on Friday under calm, sunny skies.

Foul weather had nothing to do with the noon blackout in Greenbelt on Friday— a different type of fowl were to blame for this one.

Power went down in parts of Greenbelt at around noon under sunny blue skies. PEPCO spokesperson Clay Anderson reported that a flock of birds blew a lightening arrester, which is equipment located on overhead lines.

Power was restored in Greenbelt at 1:20 p.m., according to Anderson. The birds have left the lines — for now.

Assistant City Manager David Moran confirmed the power outage affected buildings in the Roosevelt Center area. He also heard reports of outages from people in GHI and residents in Belle Point and other areas as well.

Although Greenbelt has a history of storm-related power outage problems, this time the outage was simply for the birds.
