Flood Warning Remains in Effect

Rain could continue in Greenbelt throughout the day.

The flood warning for Prince George's County in central Maryland has been extended through 4 p.m. Thursday.

The rainfall has slowed in Greenbelt, but the National Weather Service predicts that showers will continue today with a chance of thunderstorms. They're also warning of some patchy fog before noon. Tonight showers are likely with a possible thunderstorm. So we're not out of the woods yet for potential power outages.

NWS predicts new rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch.

Don't take risks out on the roadways.

According to the National Weather Service, most flooding related deaths occur in vehicles and encourages drivers not to cross flooded roads or bridges.

The Prince George's County office of the county executive released an Thursday.

Mortorists are encouraged to drive cautiously in ongoing heavy rain to avoid hydroplaning, which occurs when one or more tires of a vehicle lose contact with the road, making it difficult to control the vehicle. Drivers should reduce speeds and increase the distance between their car and the one preceding it, according to a Maryland State Police report.

Power Outages

As the ground becomes soggier, tree roots become less anchored in the ground, making it more likely that they'll topple into power lines. At 10 a.m., the Pepco outage map showed fewer than five customers in the Greenbelt and surrounding areas reporting power outages (zip codes 20740, 20742, 20737and 20770). Although six homes on 20 Hillside are still without direct power from Pepco since Irene came through town, so perhaps this list does not reflect that.

If your power goes, you can report it directly to Pepco.
