Greenbelt's Giant Food Gets a Facelift

The early buzz for the newly remodeled store is positive.

After three months, the facelift at Giant Food of Greenbelt is finally finished. On April 8, the store celebrated its grand opening.

Some highlights of the new store include: a whole section devoted to organic food, wider aisles, extra produce aisles, additions to frozen foods and new cases for the bakery, deli, meats and seafood.

Bonnie Man, who has shopped at the Greenbelt store for the past four years, was impressed with the new salad bar.

“I think it looks nice. I like the yellow. Everything looks clean. I think that’s pretty important,” said Man, who was accompanied by three of her co-workers from the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation on their lunch break.

The store began renovations in late January. According to Store Manager Brandi Petway, Giant Food is remodeling about 100 stores in the area.

“Giant has made a commitment to invest in all of their stores,” she said. “We have a better variety. We have good quality, and we have good staffing, good customer service.”

Ellen Beach, who lives close by, has been shopping at this store location once a week for more than 20 years. These days, she can’t reach as high on the shelves and occasionally needs a helping hand to get what she needs.

“Once I find a row, it’s okay," Beach said. "The trouble is they put everything so high I can’t reach half of it. That’s my biggest problem.”

Overall, she’s impressed with the new store, one she has opted over the Safeway which is also nearby.

“I like [the renovation], if I ever get used to it. It’s just that everything is so spread out now. I’ve got to remember where everything is, but other than that, I think it’s an improvement,” Beach said.
