Same-Sex Marriage an 'Economic Imperative'

Montgomery County official tells conference attendees that communities that welcome "the creative class" will succeed.

A vote in favor of same-sex marriage in November could also be a vote for improving Maryland's long-term economic prospects, according to one Montgomery County official.

Lily Qi, a special projects manager for Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, Thursday told some attendees of the Maryland Association of Counties conference in Ocean City that communities that attract "the creative class" will succeed. Qi was speaking at a seminar on use of incentives for positive economic development.

She specifically linked the same-sex marriage vote to improving the climate for entrepreneurs in Maryland.

"It is an economic imperative that we welcome all people," said Qi, following the meeting.

"An area that tends to welcome people of different backgrounds is a place that will thrive."

Qi said the vote can "send a message that we are accepting of people who are different."

You're RIGHT--VWK--Laura, for the love of God (and I mean that literally) please stop talking. On behalf of true Christians everywhere, I would like to say we would never wish anyone to go to hell, or take delight in seeing anyone go there. Being gay does not condemn you to hell. Being sinful does not condemn you to hell. Rejection of Jesus as the Son of God will. Every last one of us commits some type of sin on a daily basis. If you ask Jesus for forgiveness and commit your life to him, you will be forgiven. He loved us all enough to take our punishment for us - all you have to do is ask. Now, VWK--go back and read your OWN post. Read it again and again and again. You're right that God forgives Sinners; however, NONE of these people believe that homosexuality is a sin. And, NONE of them believe the Bible is REAL. And, NONE of them believe Jesus died for their sins. So, yes--unfortunately, they ARE all going to Hell. If you'll read way back from the beginning, I told them to ask for forgiveness. I said I would "pray" for them; however, they laughed about it and called Jesus GAY. So, do you really think that NOT asking for forgiveness, continuing on the same path they're on and NOT repenting (turning away from homosexuality) is going to get them into Heaven? NO. And, if your church teaches you that homosexuality is "normal" and "okay" with God, you'd better find another church. Too many "false prophets" in these last days who'd rather live for the world; not God!

Also, VWK--the Bible clearly says in 1 Corinthians 6:9 that homosexuality IS a sin. And, yeah--if they asked God to forgive them, and repented, they WOULD be saved. But, they're delusional. They actually think they can keep doing what they're doing and still go to Heaven. I don't "wish" anyone goes to Hell. I prayed for these "sick" people. But, they have to WANT to accept Christ. Since they have repeatedly REJECTED CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR, THEY ARE GOING TO HELL. You cannot change them. And, they only have ONE chance. God is not a God of second chances. If Jesus comes back tonight, they go to Hell--it's that simple. At least, I KNOW where I'm going when I die. And, yes--I thank the Lord for EVERYTHING. True--we are all born sinners. But, those who rebuke the Lord and do what they are doing will NEVER enter the Kingdom. The Bible also clearly states to AVOID THE WICKED AND EVIL PEOPLE. So, if you ARE a "Christian," VWK--then shame on you for involving yourself with these wicked perverted people who have ALL turned their backs on Jesus! Good-bye. I'm deleting PATCH, as I have NO FURTHER thing to say to any non-believers. Believers are supposed to avoid all such people and stay with those who ARE believers in Christ. BYE!

Don’t worry Laura, you will be decaying in the ground after you die just like everyone else.

Is Laura's health the only rude remark you have to back up whatever your trying to prove, which nobody even knows anymore what your trying to prove. Also in earlier comments I had seen mention of Laura's children. How dare anyone bring somebodies family into such a filthy sounding discussion. You don't know them, and whose to say they will grow up with the same believes as their parents. My dad is a huge supporter of liberal ideas and now that I'm old enough to understand politics I have changed my own views on political issues to more of a conservative view. When a liberal can beat me in an argument with facts, and without changing the subject or calling me some idiotic name, then I will have respect for them but until then, they will get nothing from me.

Since I was the one originally quoted in the Patch piece that triggered all these back and forth comments, let me just clarify on a couple of things to set the record straight: 1. I talked about the creative class as a phrase coined by Richard Florida, who, in his famous book, "Rise of the Creative Class," argues that a locale that is attractive to gays is also one that thrives. So gays were not singled out as the creaitve class or the only creative class, which is loosely defined in the book as all of us who engage in knowledge-based jobs or economy. My comments were in the larger context of a communty's overall tolerance toward people they perceive to be "different." This very short piece does not really reflect exactly what I said at the conference. Many people approached me after the panel and not a single one mentioned anything about my comments on same sex marriage because it was mostly about economic development and this was taken out of context. 2. A better way to understand my views would be to read my article on the subject, which bears the same title as this short piece by the Patch, called "Same Sex Marriage as Economic Imperative," here is the link, http://www.asianfortunenews.com/article_0912.php?article_id=16. Thanks for your interests and comments. --Lily Qi
