According to Marc Kapastin, a representative for Beltway Plaza, the mall was notified earlier today by WSSC officials that water would be turned off at 4:30 p.m. and would be back on no earlier than this evening—likely after the mall is closed—and possibly not until tomorrow.

There are more than 100 tenants in the mall. It will be up to each one to decide whether to close due to lack of water, Kapastin said. Beltway Plaza security and maintenance staff are notifying each business of the impending shutoff.

Original story: 1:25 p.m.
A water main break in College Park early Saturday may leave numerous Greenbelt businesses without water until Sunday afternoon.

At around 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. this morning, there was a break in a 24-inch main at the intersection of Greenbelt Road and Branchville Road in College Park, said Jerry Irvine, a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission spokesperson.
The water was shut off at around 11 a.m., Irvine said. Crews remain on the scene. Though customers may still have water, taps should run dry soon, he said.
While just 20 customers are affected, Irvine said, the broken main also serves Beltway Plaza Mall in Greenbelt, where numerous businesses and restaurants are located.

As of noon on Saturday, business in the Beltway Plaza Mall still had water.

Marc Kapastin, a representative for Beltway Plaza, said a dispatcher at the mall reported that water had run dry sometime early in the morning, but was flowing again by 8 a.m. and had been working continuously since.

Customers may experience water loss over night and into tomorrow due to the nature of the repair, Irvine said.

According to on-scene technicians, the broken pipe is buried fairly deep, so WSSC had to call in a contractor with the appropriate equipment to handle the repair. This will make for a longer repair process, Irvine said.

As of 12:30 p.m. Saturday, WSSC techs were on the scene, and the repair crew was on its way but had not yet arrived.

The repair is what is referred to a as a “two-shift job,” meaning once repairs begin they will take approximately 12 to 16 hours to complete.

WSSC expects water to be restored by sometime Sunday.
