This Little Piggy Went to Greenbelt

A loose pet pig took a brief tour of the city Friday, but is now back home.

The Greenbelters Yahoo listserv was atwitter all weekend because of a pig on the run.

According to Greenbelt resident Colette Zanin, at approximately 3:45 p.m. Friday, she saw, "a small pig running at full tilt on the pedestrian walkway behind Northway, heading in the direction of Crescent."

Zanin said in the post that she had informed Animal Control and would not call the police about the piglet, but assured readers that she was "not hallucinating, s/he passed right by me, snortling away."

This initial post inspired a slew of responses with everyone trying their hand at pig-related jokes. These are some of the best:

"Gee, that is about the worst direction s/he could have been going ... St Hugh's Oktoberfest is tomorrow, and Silke Pope has been there cooking the pork roasts all day. Not the best direction for that pig to be going," Laura Kressler posted.

"ONLY IN GREENBELT!!!" Katrina Boverman posted.

"Though I wonder, too, if I offer cash or coins, will St. Hugh, in exchange, tender loins? Alas, my sense of restraint remains in hock: I'm hogging bandwidth with all this piggish prose," Andy Carruthers posted, along with several other pig puns.

The pig did end up making its way back home, according to a post by Jennifer Bryson. Bryson said she knew the owners and notified them immediately after spotting the posts on Greenbelters, and they were able to pick the pig up from Animal Control.
