Talent Shines at Labor Day Tryouts

Future stars take the spotlight at the first day of tryouts for the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival talent show.

Future stars showed their stuff at the talent show tryouts on Wednesday in the Greenbelt Community Center.

Judging the talent was former president of the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival committee, Rick Ransom.

The show gives performers the ability to share their talent with the community. “There’s no pressure,” Ransom said, “Just show what you can do and get out on stage at Labor Day."

So, what can Greenbelters expect at this year’s talent show?

Musical performances have always been a regular at the show, according to Ransom — like that of the teen band “Cushioned Fall," who tried out Wednesday and will be making their second appearance at the festival.

Also making an appearance, will be self-taught electric guitarist, Isaiah Lemons, age 13. “I asked my mom to get me an electric guitar for my 10th birthday, and I’ve been playing ever since,” Lemons said, just before he began a mouth-dropping performance, playing his guitar behind his back.

While there is no formal prize for the talent show, the chance to showcase one's abilities to a crowd is a reward in itself, according to Ransom. “It’s an opportunity for people to be out in front of other people and present themselves,” he said.
