Silver Diner Opens a Saturday Farmers Market in Greenbelt

Now there's a Saturday farmers market in Greenbelt, as the Silver Diner continues its push toward fresh and local.

It wasn't enough for Chef Ype that the was starting to shed its greasy spoon image, he wanted to . Throughout Maryland and Virginia, the diner has been opening up farmers markets—and on Saturdays, starting June 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., it's Greenbelt's turn.

Chef Ype, executive chef and co-founder of the Silver Diner, promised to be on hand when the market opens. He also said the Silver Diner is giving $1 coupons per table to everyone in the restaurant this Saturday to use at the grand opening.

That's what the diner is doing for the customers. For the vendors, Ype said the restaurant is willing to buy the food they have left over, as long as they are selling items on the Silver Diner's menu.

"It doesn't get any fresher," Ype said, asking how many times someone could get fresh basil, blueberries and tomatoes picked at 5 or 6 o'clock in the morning—just a few hours later at 10 o'clock.

Brimming with the enthusiasm, Ype talked about his passion for fresh food and supporting the local economy, declaring that the Silver Diner was on the forefront of a whole new wave that's going to stay.
