Konrad Herling reviews 'Bridesmaids'

Konrad Herling gives 'Bridesmaids' 2 and 1/2 -- out of 3 pops of popcorn.

Just returned home from seeing "Bridesmaids."  Enjoyed it.  One might see this as one long clip from a "Saturday Night Live" episode, featuring Kristin Wiig and Maya Rudolph, but there is a bit more to the film's story that makes it enjoyable throughout.

Maya Rudolph plays Lillian, who is about to move into big money and high society through her prospective marriage.  While Lillian has chosen for her maid of honor -- her longtime friend since elementary school, Annie, played by Kristen Wiig -- a rivalry quickly develops between Annie and bridesmaid Helen, played perfectly by Rose Byrne.

Helen is a new friend of Lillian's, whose hair is never out of place and who is 180 degrees different in character and background from Annie.  This new relationship flips Annie out as it prompts her to think she's lost her best-friend connection with Lillian to the new, wealthy and "perfect" Helen.

The pre-wedding back-and-forth between Annie, Helen, and to a lesser degree, the other bridesmaids, takes place while Annie is trying to hold her ground at work, remain in her apartment with two very trying roommates, and figure out her relationships with two very different types of men.

Besides the obvious comedic elements to this film, I recommend it to anyone who has gone through tough times in their life.  Annie has all but given up pursuing her dream of a successful career and a positive, loving relationship.  It's up to you to go see the film and find out if things change for her and whether she pulls it off as the maid of honor.

One last thing, a new actor for me, Michael Hitchcock, is delightful.  I'll let you figure out which role he plays when you see the film.
