We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children. You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

Artful Afternoon
Where/When: Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Road, Greenbelt, Sunday, May 1. 1-3 p.m.
Why Go: Make simple puppets for the magic lantern show or design garden-themed crafts.

Aviation Art Contest
Where/When: College Park Aviation Museum, 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive, College Park, Saturday, April 30. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Why Go: Show off your talent. Create an aviation-themed poster.

Soccer and Board Games
Where/When: College Park Community Center, 5051 Pierce Ave., College Park, Saturday. 7-9 p.m.
Why Go: Kids ages 10-17 are welcome to play outdoor soccer or board games inside.

Day Out With Thomas the Train
Where/When: Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, 901 West Pratt St., Baltimore, Md., April 29-May 1. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: The beloved cartoon character will seem to come to life on the 25-minute ride.
Price: $19 for ages 2 and up

Kennedy Center Young Performers
Where/When: The Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. Saturday, April 30, 6 p.m.
Why Go: A rare chance to see some of the country's best music students. The Juilliard School performs at the Terrace Theater.
Price: Free; no tickets required.
