Reel and Meal Celebrates its 4th Anniversary

Monday night, with complimentary cupcakes, an optional vegan buffet and a film exploring health inequalities, Reel and Meal at the New Deal celebrates four years.

Reel and Meal at the New Deal is celebrating its 4th anniversary Monday night with the documentary feature, “Unnatural Causes: In Sickness and in Wealth.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been four years. We’re very excited about this anniversary,” Reel and Meal founding member Cam MacQueen said.

Chef Karim and Maria will serve an optional vegan buffet meal for $13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the New Deal Café. The free movie will start at 7 p.m.

Complimentary vegan cupcakes of assorted flavors, some gluten free, will be served as part of the anniversary celebration — a la Reel and Meal patron Robin Walker.

The Prince George’s County Peace & Justice Coalition is sponsoring the 56-minute documentary, which is part of a four-hour series exploring the racial and socioeconomic inequalities in health. It asks the question — do we all have an equal chance for health?

Karyn Pomerantz, a teacher at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services will facilitate a Q&A following the documentary.

“We are grateful to the Greenbelt community for all their support and we’re especially grateful to Chef Karim, Maria and their wonderful staff,” MacQueen said. “We hope to keep the environmental social justice-based discussion going in our community living room — the New Deal Café.”

Reel and Meal at the New Deal is a free monthly film series held on third Mondays.
