Get Out: This Weekend in Greenbelt

Start the month off right in Greenbelt.

It’s the first weekend in August, and the city has a variety of events, both indoors and out, and plenty that the whole family can enjoy. Check out all that Greenbelt has to offer.

The Greenbelt Mamas and Papas are having a sand party on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Drop by the sand volleyball court at Braden Field and enjoy some fun in sand and sun. Don't forget to bring your sand toys.

The Cypress Trio will be playing at the New Deal Café in the Roosevelt Center on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. You all will feel like you're in Louisiana as you listen to accordian, fiddle and Cajun French vocals. The only thing missing is a mint julep. But, hey, ask , no tellin' what southern treat she might be able to concoct for you. We're pretty spoiled by not being required to pay cover charges at the New Deal. So don't forget to tip the talent.

will be showing "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later" on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m., presented by The Dreadnought Theatre Co. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $12 for students and seniors. The play delves into the minds of Laramie, Wy. residents, ten years after gay University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, was murdered on the outskirts of town. And this time, when members of the Tectonic Theatre Project returned to Laramie, they spoke with Shepard's murderer.

Come out on Sunday, Aug. 7, to the Greenbelt Community Center and embrace Indian culture. It's Artful Afternoon time, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and this month's theme is Hooray for Bollywood. Explore the art of the "henna tattoo," from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and get a temporary one of your own. Hang around afterward because at 3 p.m. Bollywood film clips introduce a live dance performance.

While you're at it, stop by the the community center and see the Greenbelt Museum's exhibit “Green from the Start: A History of Gardening in Greenbelt." The center also has a studio open house and sale from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. — poke your head in and say "howdy" to its nine artists in residence and see what creative magic they have dreamed up. You can even buy some to take home with you. There's a whole artful lot more to do, so check it out.
