Get Out: This Weekend in Greenbelt

See what the Greenbelt area has to offer for weekend fun.

It’s the last weekend in July, so it’s the perfect opportunity to get out in Greenbelt and experience some of the activities and local events that the town has to offer. See musical acts, attend local programs or even get outside in the summer weather.

Looking for a program for children? On Saturday, July 30, the Greenbelt Public Library will be having Slim Harrison: Sunnyland Music. This is a special program in addition to other activities that the library routinely holds. It begins at 2 p.m. and is marketed for children ages 6 to 12, though younger children are welcome to attend as well. Slim Harrison has been performing around the country for many years and uses a variety of instruments.

Want to get outside and explore nature? The Patuxent Research Refuge will be having a Wildflower Walk at its North Tract on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to noon for anyone who wants to come out and see wildflowers in their natural habitat. Anyone is welcome on this walk to learn about certain types of flowers that grow in the area. The Research Refuge describes the North Tract as being located on Rt. 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 32.

If you’re looking for a chance to recycle old electronics, now is the time. On Saturday, July 30, the Greenbelt Public Works Facility at 555 Crescent Road is offering electronics recycling from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information call 301-474-8308. Use this as your opportunity to get rid of old or unwanted: central processing units, monitors, keyboards, printers, laptop computers, speakers, scanners, surge protectors, wires and power cords, computer mice, fax machines, recording equipment, cameras, telephones, televisions (no larger than 32"), radios, and batteries (must be taped on one end). They also take expanded polystyrene (block styrofoam #6). If you want to drop off more than 10 items or items weighing over 50 pounds, call in advance.

The in Roosevelt Center has a variety of musical acts performing over the weekend for anyone to take advantage of.

On Saturday, July 30, catch jazz legend Buck Hill accompanied by Not 2 Cool Jazz from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hill is a native to the Washington D.C. area and has been playing the saxophone for decades. Not 2 Cool Jazz is a trio that mixes a variety of jazz styles and draws inspiration from many classic jazz artists. Come out and hear what happens when these distinct musicians fuse their styles and experiences.

On Sunday, July 31, come see Ayreheart from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ayreheart mixes an assortment of instruments, including the lute, fretless bass and a variety of percussion instruments, to produce a sound like no other. The band incorporates the talents of Grammy-nominated founder Ronn McFarlane and blends old and new in a way that is unique to Ayreheart.
