Beltway Plaza Inducts 3 Local Citizens to Wall of Fame

Prince Georges County Police K9 Team Sergeant Robert Heverly partner Andy; Greenbelt Mayor Judith "J" Davis and Pastor Dan Hamlin Honored at Mall

A great turnout was on hand Saturday January 18 for the 3rd Induction ceremony for Beltway Plaza's Wall of Fame. Honored inductees included Prince George’s County Police K9 Team Sergeant Robert Heverly and his partner K9 Andy; Greenbelt Mayor Judith "J" Davis and Pastor Dan Hamlin were honored at a 1 hour ceremony on Saturday. Each honoree gave impassioned speeches relating their experiences and thanking those attending for the honor.

Marc “Kap” Kapastin, a representative from the Beltway Plaza Mall management company and event host remarked, “Today’s ceremony is a celebration and recognition of local heroes; that is, members of our community recognized for their integrity, strength of character, dedication, accomplishment and devotion to our community.”

Beltway Plaza Mall created the Wall of Fame in the spring of 2013 and has honored a number of local citizens from Prince George’s County including an educator, sports figures, and members of law enforcement. Charitable contributions have been made on behalf of each honoree to their selected charities.

K9 team Sergeant Robert Heverly and his K9 partner Andy (posthumously). Andy was fully trained to find suspects, missing persons, evidence and illegal drugs. K9 Andy and Sergeant Heverly were certified through the Prince George’s County Police Department and the North American Police Work Dog Association. In 2002, K9 Andy received an American Red Cross “Real Hero -Medal of Courage” for his help in catching an armed carjacking suspect. K9 Andy is being honored posthumously. He passed away in August 2013, at the age of 14.

Pastor Hamlin of the Greenbelt Community Church, United Church of Christ (1984-2012) is a life-long community activist and advocate for peace and justice. He organized and supported numerous events to help the poor and hungry in Prince George’s County and around the world. Dan is past President of the Board of Directors, Help By Phone, providing food, shelter, and other services to people in need in Prince George’s County.

 “J” Davis is in her eleventh term on the Greenbelt City Council. Davis served as Mayor from 1997 to 2013. Prior to her election to the City Council in 1993, she was appointed to the City’s Advisory Planning Board (APB) for ten years and was elected Chair by its members from 1988 to 1992. Davis represents the Council on the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area Board of Directors. Beltway Plaza is proud to honor J for all of her work to improve the quality of life in Greenbelt.
