Mishkan Torah Synagogue will usher in the 2012 Purim season by presenting an original full length musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Purim" or "The Villain Punished.” The show will be presented on Saturday evening, March 3, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. — tickets for the show are on sale now.
The show is a hilarious musical retelling of the Purim story, found in the Biblical Book of Esther. It has a score which is taken from Broadway, opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, and good old rock ‘n’ roll.
The score of the show features such hits as “We Jews Don’t Bow!” and “We’re Going to the Gallows and We’re Going to Hang Haman!.” The show includes over a dozen musical numbers, in styles including operatic, doo-wop, and Broadway.
The gala evening will also include light refreshments, and other surprises in the Mishkan Torah tradition. It will be an unforgettable night for all ages and religious backgrounds!
Real life fiancés and musicians, Ben Greenfield and Rachel White, will star as the royal couple King Ahasuerus and Queen Esther. Evil villainy will come in the detestable shape of that despicable perfect picture of a potentate prime minister, Haman. You will have a full opportunity to boo and hiss that man you love to hate!
The other Purim stalwarts, the noble Mordechai and the harridan Queen Vashti, will be there, along with assorted characters such as Royal Chamberlains, doo-whopping plotters, Miss Upper Lower Turkestan, and Lady Debita, the Lord High Royal Auditor. You won’t want to miss it!
The cost for the whole evening is only $10 for adults and five dollars for children. You may order tickets directly from the Synagogue or you can make reservations on the Synagogue’s web page devoted to the show.
