With only one week remaining in the 2011-2012 school year, students at Springhill Lake Elementary School celebrated their achievements before summer break begins. 

On Tuesday, May 29, Camp Fire USA and Prince George's County Councilwoman Ingrid Turner honored 42 students from Springhill Lake Elementary School for being the “Most Improved” in their class with certificates recognizing their academic achievements, and a luncheon featuring pizza, juice, carrots and dip, and patriotic cupcakes.

"Camp Fire has been honoring the students from our neighborhood school for three years,” said Rosemary Pezzuto, CEO of Camp Fire USA. “We have chosen those who have really worked hard to improve as they often are not recognized."

Camp Fire provides year-round programming for the area’s youth and families, including in-school programs, out-of-school time programs and summer camps. Funding for the programs is funded by the United Way of the National Capitol Area, Greenbelt Community Church, Camp Fire USA Donors and fundraisers.

Springhill Lake Elementary Principal Natasha Jenkins congratulated the students, explaining that it was their hard work that earned them recognition and an invitation to the luncheon.

The 42 students represented the school’s kindergarten through fifth grade classesand CRI classes.

Pezzuto ended the event by encouraging the children to read a book this summer so they could come back and share their stories with her next school year.
