Sewage Overflow Forces Condo Residents to Evacuate

Approximately 46,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed in the area early Saturday.

A mechanical failure at the Greenbriar Wastewater Pumping Station in Greenbelt caused sewage to back up into a nearby condominium building early Saturday, Aug. 6.

The Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO), caused by a mechanical failure, released approximately 46,000 gallons of wastewater between 12:15 and 5:45 a.m. in the area but did not affect any waterways, said Lyn Riggins, a spokesperson for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

As a result of the mechanical failure at the pumping station, located at 8021 Mandan Rd., occupants of at least four units in the building had to be temporarily relocated, Riggins said.
