Severe Storm Warning Friday Night

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery and Prince George's counties for Friday night, June 29. Power was reported out in wide areas.

Severe thunderstorms swept through Montgomery and Prince George's counties Friday night, June 29. Power was reported out in much of Pepco's coverage area.

The National Weather Service issued a warning at 9:42 p.m. -- an upgrade of an earlier severe thunderstorm watch. It was in effect until midnight.

"Significant cloud to ground lightning and winds in excess of 75 mph have been reported with these storms. All outdoor activities should be postponed until these storms pass," the National Weather Service said.

"Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advanced warning. Residents are urged to seek safe shelter indoors until these storms pass, and remain alert for any additional warnings," the National Weather Service added.

According to Pepco's web site, much of the utility's coverage area was reporting power outages.

The amount of wind that came through Germantown in a short time was scary and amazing! This tree went down in our neighbors front yard right as we were going to move the cars. It happened very quickly. No idea of damage to their cars at the moment, but glad its not a house or anyone hurt.

My next door neighbor. They just closed on that house and moved in about a month ago. Smoke was billowing out of the eaves. Brand new windows busted out by the police and fire hose sprayed throughout - was shooting out the back door. All boarded up now. So sad. I hear another house further up the street had a tree fall across the front of the house, blocking the front door and garage. I'm going to walk around and assess.

We had a large branch from an old tree crash onto our back porch barely missing the window. It was dark when we looked, but the yard is covered - possibly an entire tree fell down maybe roof damage. We will see in the daylight. We feel lucky to have power -especially a/c in this weather b/c we have a 4 month old daughter.

I feel bad for those who suffered damage but, wow was that an awesome storm. My five year old and I braved it out on the front porch. He loved it.
