Roosevelt Hosts Back to School Fair

Fair helps parents in Prince George's County get ready for the school year.

Before Monday's kick off for a new school year, parents and students from around Prince George’s County flooded into the hallways of Eleanor Roosevelt High School for the Inaugural Back to School Fair on Saturday.

This was the first Back to School Fair presented by Prince Georges County Public Schools (PGCPS) to help parents and students to prepare for the upcoming academic year, according to co-chair for the fair, Janice Briscoe.

“Our first goal is to help parents understand our [PGCPS] services and the programs at their individual schools and second, to ensure that all students are prepared for school and are aware of the community resources available to them.” Briscoe said.

Lining the halls of Eleanor Roosevelt High School were booths for over 200 public and charter schools in Prince George’s County. Students and parents could explore programs at these schools and even register for classes on-site.

The Back to School Fair was sponsored by a host of local organizations including WKYS-FM, PNC Bank, Staples and more. In addition to school representation, organizations from the community attended the fair, showcasing their services, such as NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Prince George’s County Department of Family Services, along with several fraternities and sororities.

“This event brings not only the school system but the entire county together to focus on the kids and their education” said co-chair to the fair, Cheryl Landis.

Admission to the fair was free to the public. Parents and students could purchase foods and snacks from several vendors.

Zumba dance fitness classes, movie premiers, student showcases and music added elements of entertainment to the educational fair. There were even opportunities for students to receive prizes such as new backpacks and school supplies donated to PGCPS.

“Everyone understands we’re here collectively to support the students.” Landis said.
