Farmers Market Will Offer Its First Holiday Market

The market may be closing for the season, but it's not the last market of the year.

Last week the Greenbelt Farmers Market welcomed its first wine vendor, Elk Run Vineyards. Now, as we approach the close of its 2011 season on Sunday, the market has announced another first — it will offer a holiday market this year.

On Sunday, December 18, the farmers market plans to host a holiday market in Greenbelt. Nancy Solomon, market master said the hours may run a little shorter than the normal 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. schedule, but that decision hasn't been finalized yet. So she encouraged Greenbelters to check the Greenbelt Farmers Market website closer to the date to get the hours.

Solomon is pleased with the results of its other first. She reported seeing a lot of people dropping by Elk Run Vineyards last Sunday. Although Greenbelt does not currently allow vendors to offer wine samples, Bob Cecil of Elk Run reported above average sales — even compared to markets that allow sampling, according to Solomon.

As this market year comes to a close, the Arlington Northwest Morris Dancers will be on hand to bid adieu to another season. Solomon said they were very colorful when they danced at the market last year and thought that this will be a nice way to end the season.
